Tell us a little about yourself:

Sara: My name is Sara Kerns and I am new to being self-employed and the small business adventure.  My area of expertise lies in Sports Medicine/Orthopedics and I am a Certified Athletic Trainer–but, after 10 years of being in the field, I decided to take a leap of faith and join my sister on this journey.  I am married to Cole and we are expecting our first child at the beginning of March!!  We have talked about being self-employed since our dating days, and we just count our blessings that this is the chosen path for us currently–we are really excited to see where the road leads!

Shay: I am Shay Kindle and even though I hold multiple degrees in the field of Science, my passion has always lain with art and design.  I always had a project of some sort on the sidelines, even when in school or working 13 years in the medical field.  My husband, Chris, pushed me to leave the medical field in order to pursue a design career full-time when he saw my frustrations with the onset of Obamacare and how it was changing the role that I could play in the rehabilitation of patients.  Consequently, I started the first DIY workshop in Lubbock called Pinspired, and other ideas and opportunities have followed.   Risen K Designs is my design/decorating business, Arrow Concrete & Stone is my decorative concrete company, and now Sara and I also have Front Door Decor!  My family is an inspiration to me: Chris is a cotton farmer and helps with our two children, Cree, our 5-year-old wildflower and Case, our 3-year-old farmer-in-training.

When did you start your business?

Our business officially launched on July 23, 2018.

What’s your favorite part of your business?

We love the creative freedom and customization behind our product–Shay is a master when it comes to creating all sorts of different “looks” and Sara keeps Shay grounded with organization and deadlines, LOL!  We live for delivery days–when we get to hang our decor and see all of the different creations gracing each customer’s home/business.  We also like that it’s always changing–getting to swap wreaths every month, or for the holidays keeps us on our toes and allows us to create differently with colors/style etc., specific to each client, for each month/season/holiday.

Do you have any hidden talents (or favorite hobbies)?

Sara:  I actually grew up playing the violin/fiddle 🙂  I played with a band briefly in college and had a great time performing on stage.  Unfortunately, I think my skills have dwindled over the years because I don’t play or perform nearly as often as I should–but I still pick it up and play when I feel the mood strike (George Strait–I’m here for ya if you ever need a new fiddle player:)).

Shay: Obviously I appreciate anything artistic and creative and “outside of the box”.   Unbeknownst to most people, my obsession with essential oils and passion to do something different from the norm led to Farm Wives Lavender; in conjunction with Rhett and Kelsi Richardson, Chris and I started FWL in the spring of 2016.  Farm Wives Lavender is located west of Lubbock and is home to 3,000 lavender plants, making it one of the larger lavender farms in Texas!  So any lavender that shows up in wreaths on client doors will be locally grown, hand harvested and smell unbelievable!

What’s your favorite restaurant in Lubbock?

Sara: I would probably have to go with Triple J’s–their spinach queso is like no other and I’m the queen of chips/dips so it speaks straight to my heart!

Shay:  Chuy’s:  The jalapeno ranch and a Texas martini take me back to Austin every time.  No offense to Lubbock, but bring on The Hill Country!

If you had a free weekend and $2,000 to spend, what would you do?

Sara:  I would travel–I love getting off the beaten path, going for a new adventure and experiencing new places.

Shay:  I am with Sara on this one.  I love experiencing new places and mingling with the locals.

What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Sara:  I have had so much support from many friends and family–my husband has by far been Front Door Décor’s biggest fan–when it comes to advice, multiple people have encouraged me by saying “Jump in with both feet, and if you fail, at least you tried which is more than what most people can say.”

Shay:  My Uncle Keith (who totally supports my dreaming and crazy ideas) told me once: “Try it; no one ever made an impact, or more money or reached their dreams by standing still.”
